Including Pets in your Wedding

Make Your Wedding Memorable – Include Your Pet!

As a celebrant, one of the things that I love to see is when a wedding ceremony perfectly reflects the character of the bride and groom. Performing 80 weddings a year in the Melbourne area, one thing that I’ve found is that every couple is unique. This makes my job all the more rewarding as I have the chance to meet so many incredible people and to share a special part of their life’s journey.

Sometimes I get the honour of being introduced to their pets as well, when a couple chooses to involve furry family members in their wedding.

A Real Life Story of a Ring Bearer

So many Melbournians are dog or cat lovers, so it’s no surprise that couples are starting to incorporate their pets into the ceremony more and more. Bupa Pet Insurance recently asked me to share my favourite pet wedding story, as well as offer tips for other pet lovers about to tie the knot. A wedding that I performed about a year ago in Coombe immediately sprung to mind. The couple’s dog, Mia, served as the ring bearer. As she bounded down the aisle during the rehearsal (she was really excited to see her owner), the rings flew off her collar where they were not-so-securely fastened.

Of course, everyone gasped and then the hunt for the rings began. It took about ten minutes, but we found them. While not ideal, it gave the whole event a little more character and is a story that I’m sure the happy couple will be telling for years to come. It also meant that a special collar was commissioned for the actual wedding ceremony. With press studs and loops, those rings weren’t going anywhere. Mia was fantastic on the big day, the crowd adored her.
